SELECTION OF RECORDINGS OF MUSIC BY HERBERT HOWELLS
There have been many recordings of music by Howells going back many years. The lists attempt to indicate the more recent recordings, and those which it is believed are still available to purchase.
The list is divided into categories such as orchestral music, choir and orchestra, choral, organ, etc.
Please note however that I have not included recordings made by e.g. cathedral choirs where only one item (usually “Like as the hart”) is by Howells. The exception is where the piece by Howells has rarely been recorded.
The Herbert Howells Society has always been active in suggesting and managing recording projects over the years. It has also supported financially a number of recordings, recently notably the King’s College Cambridge double CD, the chamber music CD (Dante Quartet and Gould Piano Trio / David Adams) and the forthcoming Bach Choir recording of Howells’ largest work : Missa Sabrinensis (which is due to be released in 2020).
We are also involved in producing “sleeve notes” for many CD’s including the recent King’s College double CD, the chamber music CD and the forthcoming Missa Sabrinensis recording.
We have been working on a piano solos CD to be released in 2020. This will involved the recording of a number of pieces by Matthew Schellhorn, most of which have never been recorded before, and some which have never been performed in public before.
The complete Violin & piano works recorded by Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard on the English Music Festival label was assisted by the society by arranging for certain items to be performed before the recording and enabling a fully edited version of the early B minor sonata to be produced.
Working with David Hill and Novello, we were able to have the full score of Sir Patrick Spens produced in time for the 2006 recording.
If I have left any recordings out inadvertently, please let me know at andrew.millinger@virgin.net
